GAME DEVELOPMENT

Museum of Tomorrow’ s Bike Safety Jeopardy game exhibit, commissioned by The City of Palo Alto, promotes safe cycling practices and sustainable transportation, reinforcing the city's commitment to community safety and environmental responsibility.

This game features jeopardy categories such as Safety Gear, Traffic Safety, and Palo Alto Trivia,
with questions tailored to educate participants on essential bike safety topics like proper signaling, navigating multi-use paths, and local cycling regulations.

The exhibit, showcased at Gunn High School, provided an engaging and educational experience, encouraging students to adopt safe and sustainable biking habits.

PLAY THE GAME

Game Concept & Features

Originally conceived as a narrative-driven adventure, the project evolved into a Jeopardy-style game to accommodate open-ended participation and increase engagement. Participants form teams and compete by answering questions in various categories, including:

Safety Gear – Understanding essential biking equipment like helmets and lights.

Traffic Safety – Navigating intersections, bike lanes, and proper signaling.

Safe Riding on Sidewalks & Shared-Use Paths – Learning best practices for riding in different environments.Palo Alto Trivia – Local cycling laws, programs, and resources.

Each correct answer earns points and an incorrect answer will not add or deduct any points

Development Process

The game was developed through a structured timeline, involving brainstorming sessions, scriptwriting, asset design, and iterative testing. The initial concept featured a story-driven approach, where players role-played as a student biking to school for the first time, making key safety decisions along the way. This later transitioned into a Jeopardy-style format to allow for greater participation.

Key milestones:
* Brainstorming & Research: Collaborated with team members to define safety topics

* Game Development: Implemented questions, scoring mechanics, and game logic in RPG MAKER

* Testing & Feedback: Conducted play tests and refined questions for clarity and engagement

* Finalization & Showcase: Delivered and exhibited at Gunn High School

Rules & Educational Takeaways

The game reinforced critical cycling safety rules, including:

* Helmet Laws: Bicyclists under 18 must wear a helmet, reducing crash-related head injuries by nearly 70%.

* Hand Signals & Traffic Laws: Proper signaling, stopping at intersections, and riding in the correct direction.

* Visibility & Night Riding: Legal requirements for bike lights and reflectors.

* Sidewalk & Multi-Use Path Etiquette: Navigating shared spaces safely and legally.

* Emergency Reporting: Using Palo Alto 311 to report bike lane obstructions or needed infrastructure improvements.
